A teenager, known as Eddie to his family, tragically lost his life during a global sailing trip when he was hit by a speeding, unlicensed boat while snorkeling in the South Pacific near Tahiti. The incident occurred in Mo’orea Bay on August 9, 2020, just before the family was set to return to the UK.

Despite efforts to resuscitate him, Eddie’s injuries were severe and fatal, as confirmed by the coroner at a recent inquest. Conflicting testimonies emerged regarding the speed of the boat that struck him, with Eddie’s father expressing concerns about the speed and proximity of the vessel.

Following the incident, an involuntary manslaughter investigation was initiated by local authorities, but no charges were filed despite legal challenges from the family. The driver of the boat claimed to have been within the speed limit, although questions arose about his alcohol consumption before the incident.

The coroner’s findings suggested that alcohol might have been a factor in the driver’s actions, but due to the driver’s familiarity with the area and his experience, the coroner did not find enough evidence to support a conclusion of unlawful killing. The court extended condolences to Eddie’s family for their devastating loss and noted their efforts to commemorate Eddie’s memory through a charity for young musicians.

Eddie’s family, deeply affected by the tragedy, established a fundraiser and a charity in his honor, emphasizing his love for music and his vibrant spirit. Eddie was laid to rest in the village where he grew up, leaving behind a legacy of love for music and cherished memories.
