Nigel Farage expressed frustration, stating that “being intelligent doesn’t pay off” after facing criticism over Reform’s inconsistent stance on the two-child benefit restriction.

In a tense radio discussion, the party leader maintained his initial call to eliminate the Tory-era policy but admitted to relenting under pressure of being labeled a “welfarist,” arguing that supporting families in modern Britain is a challenging task.

In a surprising turn, Reform MPs upheld the cap in February despite Farage’s prior endorsement of its removal. The party now intends to reintroduce the controversial measure, which limits benefits for families with more than two children, if it gains power.

Following Labour’s move to abolish the restriction, potentially uplifting nearly 500,000 children out of poverty, Farage admitted his error, stating on the BBC’s Today Programme that his attempt to promote family support was misconstrued as welfarism, leading to his concession.

While maintaining his opposition to the cap, Farage acknowledged he would reinstate it if he assumed the role of Prime Minister. When questioned if he now accepted his mistake, he asserted his stance, lamenting that being nuanced or clever was ineffective in current times where supporting families is deemed arduous.

Pressed on who influenced his decision, Farage attributed his defeat to public opinion and media pressure. When asked why he didn’t stand firm, he explained that sometimes it’s prudent to abandon contentious issues and focus on other political battles.

In a significant parliamentary vote, MPs decisively opted to scrap the cap by a vote of 458-104, disregarding opposition from Reform and Kemi Badenoch’s Conservatives.

Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Pat McFadden, emphasized the impact of the decision, highlighting the potential positive changes in children’s lives, aiming to provide every child with equal opportunities for success and well-being in their future contributions to society.
