An elderly British widow was conned out of £1million before her death in a suspicious car accident, prompting her Ghanaian lover to speak out against her family. Janet Fordham, 69, fell victim to heartless romance scammers, depleting her life savings. Struggling financially after her husband’s passing, she resorted to living in a caravan at her son’s residence in Devon.
Before her tragic demise, Janet flew to Ghana to meet a man named Daniel ‘Kofi’ Agyapong whom she met on Facebook. Agyapong had promised to help her recover the stolen £1million. Despite her family’s suspicions of foul play in her death in Ghana, Agyapong refuted the claims, asserting that they were in love and even got engaged.
An investigation revealed that Janet had been targeted by fraudsters across different countries. She flew to Ghana to meet Agyapong, hoping to retrieve her money, but the trip ended in tragedy on Valentine’s Day when the car they were in crashed. Agyapong denied any wrongdoing, attributing the accident to a narrow road and unexpected traffic.
The Ghanaian lover expressed deep sorrow over Janet’s passing, stating that she was only happy in Ghana with him. He maintained his innocence, emphasizing his love for Janet and his intention to help her reclaim her funds by involving the police to apprehend the scammers. Reports confirmed that the crash was accidental, resulting in Janet’s fatal head injury.
Official statements from the police dismissed any suspicions of foul play in Janet’s death. The High Commission in Accra was notified, and a postmortem examination concluded that the cause of death was a head injury from a road traffic accident. Authorities found no evidence of wrongdoing and ruled the incident as a tragic accident.
