A prominent figure who previously held a key role in NATO has suggested that the United Kingdom should reintroduce compulsory national service to bolster the country’s security measures. Lord George Robertson, a former NATO secretary general, proposed a system akin to Sweden’s, where individuals of all ages would have designated roles to fortify the nation’s resilience. Lord George had previously expressed concerns that the UK government was ill-prepared for potential future attacks.

Advocating for a comprehensive defense strategy similar to Sweden’s, which combines both military and civilian defense, Lord George emphasized the importance of instilling a sense of total defense duty among all residents from the age of 16 until they reach 70 years old.

In response to whether the UK should adopt distinct civil resilience roles as seen in Sweden, Lord George stated that there could be a rationale for such an approach, despite potential challenges to traditional perspectives. With the evolving nature of threats, both military and civil, Lord George advocated for a defense readiness bill that would involve society as a whole.

While the concept of a defense readiness bill may not feature in upcoming governmental speeches, Lord George stressed the importance of considering such ideas to address current security concerns effectively. Sweden’s defense doctrine highlights the dual responsibilities of military and civilian defense, with an emphasis on protecting the population during emergencies that may disrupt basic services.

The UK had previously enforced conscription laws, which phased out after World War II, with the last conscripted serviceman leaving the armed forces in 1963. Various European nations, including Sweden and other Nordic countries, have updated their war readiness protocols in response to global conflicts, such as the situation in Ukraine.

Amid escalating tensions worldwide, including the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and territorial disputes like the potential annexation of Greenland and the review of UK’s claims over the Falkland Islands by Donald Trump, discussions on enhancing national defense strategies have gained prominence.
