A surge in patients treated at private hospitals necessitating emergency care back into the NHS has raised concerns among campaigners. The Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, faced criticism for increasing outsourcing, leading to nearly 500 cases this year where patients had to be transferred back to NHS facilities for urgent treatment.

Experts are warning that redirecting patients back to the NHS after treatment at private hospitals is not only setting a new record but also a misuse of taxpayers’ money. They argue that investing in enhancing NHS hospital capacity would be a more effective use of resources instead of relying on profit-driven firms for healthcare services.

Critics, including Cat Hobbs from the public ownership campaign group We Own It, condemn the current government for allowing private sector cherry-picking, emphasizing the risks and inefficiencies of privatizing NHS services. Private hospitals, lacking in emergency care facilities and specialized training, are accused of taking on easier cases, burdening the NHS with more complex and costly patients.

The data reveals a significant increase in the number of patients being transferred from private providers to NHS hospitals for emergency care over the past years, with concerns raised about the impact of outsourcing on the healthcare system. The Independent Healthcare Provider Network (IHPN) defended the occasional need for patient transfers to higher acuity settings, highlighting strict clinical protocols in place to ensure patient safety during such transitions.

While the government touts its investment and partnership with the independent sector to reduce waiting times and improve healthcare services, critics argue that the NHS is facing escalating outsourcing, reminiscent of the controversial 2012 Tory reforms. Campaigners urge for direct investment in the NHS to enhance capacity and eliminate the reliance on the private sector for healthcare provision.
