A veteran of the Falklands War expressed his belief that King Charles could persuade Donald Trump to reconsider reports that the US might reassess its stance on the UK territory claimed by Argentina.

An alleged leaked internal Pentagon email hinted at the US exploring measures to penalize NATO allies perceived as unsupportive of Trump’s actions against Iran. The UK government affirmed on Friday that the sovereignty of the distant overseas territory belongs to the UK.

Simon Weston, a hero of the Falklands conflict, criticized the US President’s rumored actions as a “hissy fit” and speculated on how the upcoming state visit of King Charles and Queen Camilla to the US could enhance UK-US relations amid tensions in the Middle East.

King Charles and Queen Camilla are scheduled to visit the US next week to commemorate the 250th anniversary of US independence.

Despite Trump’s criticisms of Sir Keir Starmer and his efforts to pressure the UK into backing the US in the Iran conflict, Falklands veteran Simon Weston expressed hope that King Charles could persuade Trump to de-escalate tensions over the Falklands during the state visit.

Weston emphasized the need for respect for the people of the Falklands and all veterans who served during the conflict, where 255 British Armed Forces personnel lost their lives and 777 were injured in the 1982 war to reclaim the islands from Argentina.

Weston, a CBE recipient for his charity work supporting British veterans, criticized Trump for his approach, highlighting the uncertainty and distress caused to the Falklands community.

Trump mentioned that the state visit of the King and Queen could help mend the strained relations between the long-standing allies, expressing admiration for King Charles and his potential positive impact on relations.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper reiterated the UK’s stance on the sovereignty of the Falklands, emphasizing self-determination for the islanders.

A spokesperson for the Falkland Islands Government stressed the importance of self-determination as a fundamental human right, referencing the overwhelming support in a 2013 referendum for the islands to remain a UK Overseas Territory.

The Pentagon has not officially responded to the leaked email, but a spokesperson indicated that credible options would be provided to ensure allies fulfill their commitments.
