The CEO of a prominent airline has issued a warning about upcoming flight cancellations following the company’s necessity to eliminate certain routes originating from the UK.

Eivind Roald, the CEO of Norse Atlantic Airways, recently made the decision to cancel flights from London Gatwick Airport to Los Angeles due to a significant spike in jet fuel prices, which soared by over 100% within a short period.

Numerous airlines worldwide are facing flight cancellations as a result of Iran’s control over the critical Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for global supply chains. Concurrently, the US government, led by Donald Trump, continues to direct the US Navy to block Iranian ports.

During an interview with BBC Newsnight, Mr. Roald expressed his anticipation of more flight cancellations by airlines. He assured that Norse Atlantic Airways intends to maintain flights from London Gatwick, Athens, and Rome throughout the summer, but he suggested that competitors might face further cancellations, particularly in short-haul European routes.

Following the cancellation of London-Los Angeles flights, Norse Atlantic stated that the decision was influenced by an unexpected global fuel crisis, emphasizing the need to safeguard a sustainable future and ensure reliable service for passengers. The airline extended apologies to affected travelers and pledged to assist them as much as possible.

In response to concerns over jet fuel shortages and potential flight disruptions, the UK Government released a statement addressing the issue following alerts from the European Union.

EU energy commissioner Dan Jorgensen recently stated that holiday plans for many individuals could be impacted by flight cancellations or significantly expensive tickets in the near future.

The Department for Transport (DfT) has provided specific guidance to passengers booked with various carriers, including Jet2, Ryanair, Wizz, easyJet, and British Airways, reassuring them that there is currently no need to alter their travel arrangements. The government is closely collaborating with the aviation sector to monitor risks and minimize inconvenience to passengers.

Passengers are reminded of their legal rights if facing flight cancellations, including entitlement to a full refund or alternative flight arrangements. Detailed information on the current situation and its implications is available in a dedicated factsheet.
