A man from the UK has sustained serious injuries to his neck and back following a motorcycle accident while on vacation abroad.
Andrew Patterson, aged 29, experienced life-altering injuries during a tragic road crash in Canggu, located on the south-west coast of Bali. Originally from Omagh, Northern Ireland, Patterson, a tree surgeon residing in Melbourne, Australia since 2024, had traveled to Bali with a friend for a weekend getaway. The incident occurred on a Sunday evening when Patterson, riding a rented motorcycle, misjudged a turn, leading him to be flung over his handlebars and into a road sign.
As a result of the crash, Patterson suffered severe facial lacerations, including shattered cheek and eye sockets, a broken nose, and injuries to his left hand that will necessitate skin grafts. Additionally, he sustained fractures to a cervical vertebra in his neck and a thoracic vertebra in his mid-back.
Patterson’s family has initiated a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe to gather financial support for his medical treatment and potential repatriation to the UK. His sister, Andrea Marsella, explained that the accident caused significant head and facial trauma requiring reconstructive surgery and skin grafts, as well as injuries to his hand and back. She expressed gratitude for Patterson’s survival and his ability to move despite the serious injuries, highlighting the ongoing challenges of his recovery process.
With mounting medical expenses, including emergency care and surgeries, the family seeks assistance to cover the costs incurred. Describing Patterson as a beloved family member and friend, they appeal for support during this challenging period as he embarks on a lengthy road to recovery.
