A man was surprised to find out that he spent a significant £58 on a single meal after shopping at the UK’s reputedly priciest grocery store. Carmie Sellitto, a 26-year-old, shared his astonishing experience in a video on his TikTok account “touchdalight,” garnering over 522,000 views. During his visit to Daylesford Organic in London, he showcased the exorbitant prices, such as £7.50 for yogurt and £4.25 for coconut water.
Among the pricey items were bags of whole milk from Canada at £2.75 and a steak priced at £36 each. Noteworthy features of the store included a dedicated chilled room solely for cheese. However, the real shock came at the checkout where his bill totaled an eye-watering £58 for ingredients for a single meal and dessert.
The video went viral, sparking online debates on the justification of the prices. While some criticized the costs, others defended them, stating that £58 for an organic meal was reasonable. This discussion followed a Which? study that highlighted the supermarket with the sharpest price increases in the UK.
The investigation revealed a decline in annual inflation for supermarket food and drink, with Waitrose experiencing the fastest-growing prices. As experts warn of potential food cost surges due to the Middle East crisis, supermarkets with high inflation rates may still offer better value than competitors. In February, Waitrose recorded a 5.3% inflation rate, with Lidl following closely at 4.3%.
Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Asda, and Ocado also showed varying inflation rates, with Aldi having the lowest at 2.9% in February. However, this marked a significant slowdown compared to the chain’s inflation rate of 3.7% in the preceding three months.
