Astronomy enthusiasts in Britain are gearing up to witness the world’s oldest meteor shower tonight, with the possibility of up to 100 meteors visible every hour. The Lyrids meteor shower, an annual event between April 14 and April 30, is anticipated to reach its peak around 8.40pm UK-time tonight. Experts suggest that the prime time for observation is expected to be between 8.30pm on Wednesday and 1.30am on Thursday.

According to astronomer Lisa Will from San Diego City College, meteors appear as luminous streaks in the sky, characterized by their motion against the backdrop. The Lyrids meteors originate from an icy comet known as Thatcher, observed by Chinese astronomers 2,500 years ago and officially identified by amateur astronomer A.E. Thatcher on April 5, 1861. Thatcher completes its orbit around the Sun every 415 years and will not be observable again until 2283.

During the peak of the Lyrids meteor shower tonight, sky watchers may witness up to 100 meteors per hour under optimal viewing conditions, which include a dark, unobstructed sky away from urban lights and natural obstacles, ideally in open areas like fields, beaches, hilltops, or parks. Meteor showers occur when the Earth passes through trails of debris left by space rocks, causing the fragments to ignite upon entering the atmosphere, creating the well-known fiery streaks often termed as shooting stars.

To catch a glimpse of the meteor shower, viewers are advised to avoid areas with light pollution and begin observing the skies at least 20 minutes before the peak time to allow their eyes to adjust to the darkness and to avoid the Moon’s direct glare. They are also encouraged to refrain from looking at bright sources such as fires or phones, and to prepare with a chair, blanket, and warm beverages for extended outdoor viewing.

While the Lyrids meteor shower is expected to be visible globally, the Northern Hemisphere is predicted to offer the best viewing opportunities this year, with favorable weather conditions anticipated in the UK due to minimal cloud cover and a crescent Moon causing minimal light interference. BBC lead weather presenter Simon King advises waiting until after 2 am for the Moon to set below the horizon, providing a completely dark sky for optimal viewing of the meteor streaks.

King highlights that the colors and brightness of the Lyrids meteors, including occasional bright fireballs outshining Venus, are distinctive features of this meteor shower. The colors result from tiny dust particles interacting with Earth’s atmosphere, while fireballs are produced by larger debris pieces creating a flash and a trailing line as they pass through the atmosphere.
