A close friend of Joanna Simpson, who was tragically killed by her husband in 2010, is set to participate in the upcoming London Marathon to honor all the women who lost their lives to male violence last year. Hetti Barkworth-Nanton, 59, who had a strong bond with Joanna, has been advocating for justice against Joanna’s killer, British Airways pilot Robert Brown. Hetti plans to run the marathon while wearing a specially designed pink cape adorned with butterflies, symbolizing each woman who fell victim to male violence in the UK in 2025.

Her primary goal is to raise awareness about the alarming statistics revealing that, on average, one woman is murdered by a partner or ex-partner every five days in England and Wales. Hetti, who holds the position of chair of trustees at the charity Refuge, emphasized the importance of shedding light on the issue to engage a wider audience in discussions about violence against women and girls (VAWG).

The parole hearing for Robert Brown, who was sentenced to 26 years for Joanna’s manslaughter, is approaching, sparking concerns among Joanna’s family and friends. Hetti expressed her apprehension about the parole process, stating that it often re-traumatizes the victims’ loved ones. She highlighted the significance of remembering and honoring the lives of women lost to male violence, especially during a time when organizations like Refuge are facing financial challenges.

The tragic incident involving Joanna occurred in 2010 when Brown brutally murdered her at their home in Windsor, Berks, shortly before their divorce was finalized. Brown’s early release last year was halted by Justice Secretary Alex Chalk, citing concerns about public safety. Despite Brown’s legal attempts to challenge the decision, the High Court upheld the Justice Secretary’s ruling based on the substantial risk Brown posed to society.

Joanna’s story has inspired Hetti to advocate for victims of domestic violence and raise awareness through her participation in the London Marathon. Joining forces with prominent figures and Refuge ambassadors, Hetti aims to honor the memory of victims of domestic homicide and male violence against women.
