Donald Trump is set to conclude his current presidential term in January 2029, but concerns have been raised by author Michael Wolff about the possibility of Trump holding onto power beyond that point.
Wolff, a journalist known for his extensive coverage of Donald Trump, including the book ‘Fire and Fury’ detailing Trump’s first term, suggested that Trump might attempt to retain influence even after his second term ends.
Although the US constitution limits presidents to two terms, Trump has hinted at a potential run for the presidency again, with the emergence of ‘Trump 2028’ merchandise. In an interview with NBC, Trump hinted at the feasibility of such a move, stating that there are ways to achieve it and acknowledging the support for his candidacy.
During a podcast episode on The Daily Beast, Wolff discussed how Trump could maintain a degree of control in the White House through his children, notably singling out Donald Trump Jr. as a potential successor to carry on his legacy.
Wolff highlighted Donald Jr.’s close ties to his father and suggested that he is the most probable candidate to continue Trump’s political agenda, especially since other Trump siblings like Ivanka and Tiffany have distanced themselves from political aspirations. Lara Trump, married to Eric Trump, also expressed openness to a future political run in a podcast.
As Trump faces international challenges, including tensions with Iran and strained relations with NATO allies, his decisions could impact his legacy as he approaches the end of his term. Wolff emphasized that Trump’s ability to exert influence post-presidency will be crucial for maintaining his political relevance, potentially even hinting at a break from the Republican Party if necessary.
Reflecting on Trump’s potential post-presidency scenario, Wolff suggested that Trump may find satisfaction in retaining political sway through interactions with the Republican Party, criticizing Democratic leaders, and ultimately passing away with a sense of fulfillment. However, Wolff also noted that Trump’s contentment could be jeopardized if a successor within the Republican Party emerges.
