Commuters are experiencing significant disruption this week with two 24-hour Tube strikes initiated by members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT). The strikes, occurring until midday on Wednesday and resuming at the same time on Thursday, are in response to proposed changes to drivers’ working conditions by Transport for London (TfL).

TfL has described the changes as “voluntary” and “minimal,” but the industrial action has resulted in widespread delays across various Tube lines. Services on the Circle, Central, and Piccadilly lines have been either suspended or partially disrupted, with severe delays affecting other parts of the network.

During the strikes, the Piccadilly and Circle lines will have no service, and the Metropolitan line will not operate between Baker Street and Aldgate. Additionally, the Central line will be suspended between White City and Liverpool Street.

The RMT union, engaged in a dispute over a proposed shift to a four-day working week, plans to conduct four more 24-hour strikes in May and June if the disagreement is not resolved.

In response, TfL’s Director of Customer Operations, Nick Dent, expressed frustration over the strike action, emphasizing that the changes for train drivers are optional. Dent urged the RMT to collaborate with TfL and other trade unions to address concerns rather than resort to industrial action.

RMT official Jared Wood highlighted that the dispute encompasses more than just the four-day week proposal, citing issues such as shift lengths and alterations to annual leave. Wood emphasized the necessity for TfL to reconsider their proposals to reach a resolution.

RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey criticized TfL’s reluctance to make concessions during negotiations, expressing disappointment and emphasizing the importance of a negotiated settlement to avoid further strike actions.
