London Mayor Sadiq Khan strongly criticized President Donald Trump’s provocative threats directed at Iran and likened the need to hold him accountable to the way Russian actions in Ukraine were condemned. Khan, a member of the Labour Party with a history of discord with Trump, condemned the US President’s statements implying the potential demise of a civilization unless Iran complied with his demands. Trump later backed down following a last-minute ceasefire agreement.

In response to Trump’s warning to Iran, Khan expressed his disapproval, labeling it as needlessly offensive for a leader of a democratic nation to speak about another civilization in such terms. Khan emphasized the importance of respectful dialogue in achieving lasting peace, highlighting the significance of responsible leadership in fostering unity.

Furthermore, Khan raised concerns about joint US and Israeli activities in the Middle East, questioning the legality of attacks on civilian infrastructure. He stressed the necessity of supporting allies in the region and advocated for permanent ceasefires in both Lebanon and Iran to prevent further loss of innocent lives. Khan underscored the importance of denouncing actions that endanger civilians, drawing parallels between Russia’s actions in Ukraine and those of the US and Israel in Iran.

Amid calls from Keir Starmer and other global leaders for Israel to cease its assault on Lebanon, Trump agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran, easing tensions. However, Israel continued its military operations in Lebanon against Hezbollah, a militant group backed by Iran.
