Football enthusiasts can now enjoy late-kick off World Cup games in pubs until 2 am, as the Government has granted extended opening hours for key matches. This initiative allows bars in England and Wales to operate an additional two hours later until 1 am for round of 32 and last 16 games starting from 5 pm to 9 pm. For matches with kick-offs between 9 pm and 10 pm, last orders will be extended to 2 am. The Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, emphasized the importance of keeping fans in the pub to support their teams, using legal powers to extend licensing hours for significant events like the World Cup.

In addition, the Home Office hinted at the possibility of extending pub hours for other major events to promote communal celebrations. Emma McClarkin, CEO of the British Beer and Pub Association, praised the government’s decision, highlighting the pub’s role in fostering community spirit and providing a space for national celebrations. Kate Nicholls, chair of UKHospitality, lauded the move to prolong licensing hours for knockout games, benefitting both fans and hospitality businesses during the World Cup. Michael Kill, CEO of the Night-Time Industries Association, welcomed the extension as a positive measure to boost the hospitality sector, create economic opportunities, and enhance the matchday experience for fans.
