Some fuel stations are currently facing temporary shortages, according to the executive chairman of Asda, Allan Leighton. The recent Iran conflict has impacted fuel supplies as demand from drivers has surged. As a result, fuel volumes have significantly increased, surpassing supply levels. Leighton emphasized that the issue is temporary, causing sporadic shortages during delivery waits, but they are quickly addressed.

Asda, the UK’s second-largest fuel retailer with 320 forecourts nationwide, has experienced issues only at select pumps in a few of its locations. This situation coincides with the upcoming Easter holidays, where a significant number of Britons are expected to travel, leading to heightened demand for fuel and potentially crowded forecourts.

Government officials have advised against panic buying, despite some stations indicating low fuel availability. Industry representatives from MFG and the Petrol Retailers Association reassured that fuel supply across the UK remains stable, with efforts in place to maintain consistent availability. The UK heavily relies on imported crude oil for petrol production, with potential diesel shortages anticipated by mid-April due to pre-war stock depletion.

Contingency plans for fuel rationing are being prepared in case of prolonged disruptions from the Middle East conflict, prioritizing emergency services’ access to fuel. Rising oil prices following the Iran conflict have resulted in increased pump prices, with the RAC reporting a national average of 150p per liter for unleaded fuel and approaching 180p for diesel.

As concerns about potential price gouging arise, industry veteran Leighton rejected accusations of profiteering, pointing out the government’s substantial tax revenue from higher fuel prices. Amid calls to cancel planned fuel duty increases, Leighton warned of potential food price inflation due to the ongoing Middle East conflict’s impact on fertilizer costs.

Despite a decline in profits, Asda remains committed to offering competitive prices for consumers, driving sales growth amidst market challenges. The Treasury explained that the increased VAT revenue from fuel during price surges may offset reductions from other items.

The overall impact of the current fuel supply situation and price fluctuations underscores the need for proactive measures to ensure stable access to fuel and mitigate broader economic implications.
