Donald Trump has criticized the current state of the US-UK special relationship and issued a warning to Britain regarding a trade agreement. The US President, known for his unpredictable behavior, has been openly critical of Keir Starmer in recent times, amid escalating tensions surrounding the US-Israeli actions in the Middle East. These actions have resulted in the closure of the vital shipping lane, the Strait of Hormuz, leading to a surge in global oil prices.

During an interview with Sky News, Trump expressed his fondness for Starmer but lambasted the UK government’s approaches to energy and immigration. When asked about the current state of the special relationship, Trump initially responded with indifference, highlighting instances where he felt the UK had not been supportive when needed. He further remarked that the relationship, while previously stronger, was now disappointing, hinting at the possibility of altering trade terms.

Referring to the UK Prime Minister, Trump praised Starmer but criticized the decision to close North Sea oil, attributing it to the high energy prices in the country. Despite concerns about strained relations overshadowing the upcoming King’s Royal visit to the US, Trump downplayed the impact, emphasizing his longstanding acquaintance with the King and his non-involvement in the mentioned issues.

Contrary to Trump’s sentiments, UK Treasury minister James Murray emphasized the enduring nature of the special relationship. Trump’s comments also come in the wake of Chancellor Rachel Reeves’s disapproval of the US-Iran conflict. Reeves expressed frustration and anger over the repercussions faced by families in Britain due to the ongoing war, criticizing the lack of a clear plan or objective in the US’s actions, particularly regarding the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

Reeves condemned the conflict as a hasty decision that was affecting families globally, highlighting the need for clarity in objectives and exit strategies in such situations.
