A headteacher from Shiremoor Primary School in Newcastle has turned down the Government’s offer of a free breakfast club, citing financial and logistical challenges. Barbara Middleton expressed concerns about the mandatory 30-minute allocation before lessons for breakfast and the insufficient funding provided for staffing. Meanwhile, Sir Keir Starmer visited a school breakfast club in Manchester and announced the addition of 500 more free breakfast clubs. The Department for Education (DfE) stated that many schools find the scheme feasible. Schools receive daily funding and per-pupil funding from the government to cover food and staffing costs. In contrast, Headteacher Craig Brown of Dean Bank Primary and Nursery School in Ferryhill, Co Durham, embraced the scheme, expecting £10,000 in government support for the upcoming academic year. Despite the financial boost, he mentioned that the funding would not cover all program expenses. The school joined the initiative as an improvement from its previous reliance on a charitable foundation for breakfast club funding. On the other hand, Ms. Middleton’s school currently provides bagels to all children each morning with support from the charity Magic Breakfast, even for latecomers. However, implementing the government’s breakfast club program with a 30-minute prerequisite before classes poses staffing and logistical challenges for Ms. Middleton’s school, which would need to accommodate over 300 children in one hall. Ms. Middleton highlighted the impracticality of allowing children to eat breakfast in class before lessons, as teachers use that time to prepare for the day ahead.
