A former Member of Parliament who previously served as a police officer has strongly criticized the leadership of the organization representing rank-and-file officers, calling it “rotten.” Labour’s Jonathan Hinder recounted his experiences on the front lines to highlight the disappointment felt by officers towards the Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW). The arrest of chief executive Mukund Krishna in connection with a fraud probe last month and the revelation of his £1.4 million earnings through salaries and bonuses have further exacerbated the situation.

During a parliamentary session, Mr. Hinder shared poignant stories from his policing days, including responding to a tragic triple homicide and aiding in various distressing situations such as preventing suicides and informing families of deaths. He emphasized the challenging and often thankless nature of police work, expressing concerns that many of the Federation’s 140,000 members feel compelled to remain due to limited alternatives and fear of being unrepresented.

Mr. Hinder criticized the Federation’s national leadership as “rotten,” pointing out the exorbitant earnings of the unelected chief executive funded by officers’ subscriptions. He called for a significant transformation within the organization to ensure effective representation for officers. In response, Home Office minister Sarah Jones acknowledged the need for change, stating that the current situation is untenable and the government is prepared to act accordingly.

Acknowledging the recent turmoil within the Federation, Chairwoman Tiff Lynch reassured members that efforts are underway to address challenges and implement a comprehensive transformation program aimed at improving governance, financial stability, and organizational culture. The Federation has faced scrutiny, including a recent employment tribunal ruling against discriminatory practices related to pension schemes, adding to the urgency for reform.
