Team GB speed skater Niall Treacy initially placed sixth in the short track men’s 1500m final; however, due to a collision that also affected two other competitors, he was later demoted to ninth position. The referee’s ruling led to Treacy losing ground in the final event, which was expanded to accommodate two additional athletes following crashes in the semi-finals.

Finishing nearly 40 seconds ahead of the seventh-place finisher, Shoaong Liu from China, Treacy’s race was marred by the collision that also forced another Chinese skater, Long Sun, to withdraw due to injury. The gold medal was secured by Jens van ‘T Wout of the Netherlands, continuing their strong performance in the sport, with Hwang Daehoen from Korea and Roberts Kruzbergs from Latvia completing the podium.

Former Team GB skater Wilf O’Reilly expressed disappointment for Treacy, noting that the collision hindered his chances of reaching the podium. Treacy, who had led the race at one point before falling to third place, attributed the incident to his focus on pacing with the front runners, which hindered his awareness of skaters behind him.

Following a thorough review, the decision to disqualify Treacy sparked outrage among Team GB supporters on social media. Treacy, while acknowledging the setback, remained positive about his performance, expressing pride in his achievement of reaching the Olympic Games final and hoping his supporters were proud of his efforts.
