Keir Starmer has strongly criticized Foreign Office officials for withholding information regarding the Peter Mandelson security vetting controversy. The Prime Minister expressed disbelief at not being informed about Mandelson’s failed vetting, stating that he would have halted Mandelson’s appointment had he been aware.

During a tense session in the Commons, Mr. Starmer emphasized that he would not have proceeded with Lord Mandelson’s appointment as the top UK diplomat in Washington if he had known about the vetting outcome. He acknowledged his mistake in appointing Mandelson and expressed regret to the victims of Jeffrey Epstein for the decision.

The Prime Minister faced accusations of misleading Parliament after assuring MPs that due process had been followed. It was revealed that the Foreign Office overruled UK Security Vetting (UKSV) after Mandelson was denied top-level clearance. Downing Street hinted that the Prime Minister might acknowledge inadvertently misleading Parliament.

Mr. Starmer has updated Parliament on the changes made following the scandal, ensuring that appointments are not announced until security vetting is completed. Former cabinet secretary Sir Robin Butler described the situation as “impossible,” stressing the need for vetting before official announcements.

As the Prime Minister faced mounting pressure over the Mandelson issue, Scottish First Minister John Swinney criticized the government for being negligent amidst the cost-of-living crisis. The PM is expected to address MPs this afternoon, likely facing tough questions on the handling of the vetting process.
