Italians were taken aback by the dismissal of a US principal who showed students a picture of Michelangelo’s renowned sculpture David, following parental complaints labeling it as “pornography.”

Hope Carrasquilla, the principal at Tallahassee Classical School in Florida, was terminated after three parents raised objections about the content of an art class she conducted. The lesson covered Renaissance art, including iconic pieces like “David,” “Creation of Adam,” and “Birth of Venus,” all of which portray nude figures.

Upon receiving an ultimatum from Barney Bishop, the school’s board chair, Carrasquilla had to either resign or face termination. The decision sparked a mix of confusion and anger among locals in Italy, where masterpieces like Michelangelo’s David are treasured.

The Mayor of Florence, Dario Nardella, condemned the incident as “ridiculous,” expressing support for the teacher and emphasizing the importance of art education. He extended an invitation for Carrasquilla to visit Florence, a gesture applauded by many on social media.

Critics, including a satirical cartoon in an Italian daily, ridiculed the school board’s action, symbolically covering David’s nudity with an image of Uncle Sam labeled “Shame.”

In response to the invitation, Carrasquilla expressed gratitude and interest in visiting Florence to receive recognition from the city. The director of the Galleria dell’Accademia, where David is housed, expressed disbelief at the notion of David being deemed pornographic, highlighting the ignorance surrounding biblical and cultural references in Renaissance art.

In the aftermath, the school board enforced a new policy mandating advance parental notification for potentially contentious curriculum, aiming to enhance communication with parents and address concerns over teacher turnover. While the statue incident played a role in Carrasquilla’s dismissal, Chairman Barney Bishop maintained that parental awareness and involvement in controversial topics were pivotal factors in the decision-making process.
