The cost of dining out with your family has been steadily increasing over the past five years, with popular restaurant chains such as Nando’s and Pizza Express significantly raising their prices. Some of the favorite menu items have seen price hikes of over 100% between February 2021 and February 2026.

This surge in food prices, totaling a 38.6% increase, is attributed to various factors including escalating energy costs, rising wages, and supply chain expenses, leading to reduced profits for restaurants as fewer Britons opt for dining out amidst the current cost of living challenges.

Hospitality establishments have highlighted the impact of higher minimum wages, increased national insurance contributions, and business rates on their operations. Consumer advocate Martyn James pointed out that many renowned high street eateries, once synonymous with affordable family dining, have adopted a habit of raising prices to enhance profits.

For instance, at a London location, a family of four ordering main dishes, sides, and soft drinks could now spend over £75. Opting for larger portions could push the bill beyond £90 before additional items like dips or desserts. Nando’s acknowledged the cost pressures faced by the industry, emphasizing their efforts to minimize the impact on customer pricing while maintaining the value customers expect.

Similarly, at a Nerbury restaurant, a family ordering pizzas and beverages might end up paying up to £96 without including appetizers or side dishes. Pizza Express stressed their commitment to offering value to customers through initiatives like the Pizza Express Club app, which provides rewards for diners, including free menu items.

In another scenario, four servings of chicken katsu curry and soft drinks at a London branch could cost around £73 before adding extras. Wagamama acknowledged the challenges posed by economic conditions affecting the hospitality sector, highlighting their focus on providing value through various accessible options and loyalty programs.

As dining costs continue to rise, families opting for carveries on Sundays could expect to pay £65.96. To counter the escalating prices, consumers are advised to utilize loyalty apps, explore midweek deals, share dishes, avoid extras, and check voucher platforms before dining out.

Moreover, to manage increasing food expenses, individuals can consider preparing quick midweek meals at home and shopping at budget-friendly supermarkets to make their money go further.
