A farmer in Derbyshire is contemplating breeding “less photogenic” cows due to social media influencers and sightseers disturbing his herd for selfies, videos, and even yoga sessions. Alex Birch, a cattle farmer, expressed concern over the increasing trend of visitors getting too close to his Highland cows at Baslow Edge in the Peak District, where they have become a social media attraction. Despite warnings from the Peak District National Park Authority to avoid approaching or taking selfies with cows, Birch noted that visitors were disregarding these cautions.

With incidents of people filming yoga videos and swarming the cows with cameras, Birch emphasized the lack of understanding among visitors regarding the potential dangers of interacting with livestock. This behavior has escalated over the years, especially during the pandemic, prompting Birch to reluctantly consider out-breeding the Highland cows by crossing them with another hill breed to make them less appealing to visitors.

Concerns about visitor safety and potential liability for farmers in case of injuries have further fueled Birch’s decision. The Peak District National Park Authority cautioned against hugging cows, highlighting the risks of being trampled, charged, or attacked, especially when cows have calves. Birch stressed that the issue of visitors intruding on his farm has persisted for years, causing ongoing clashes between locals and social media enthusiasts.

Instances of locals taking action against influencers for disrupting public spaces have been reported in other regions, such as in Vermont, where a road was shut down to deter influencers chasing autumnal colors. Additionally, a man in another incident voiced his disapproval of influencers filming in public spaces, emphasizing the importance of respecting shared environments.

The challenges posed by the influx of influencers and sightseers intruding on private spaces and public settings underscore a broader issue of responsible use of social media platforms and public spaces. Balancing the desire for online visibility with respect for privacy and safety remains a key concern in today’s digital age.
