Rory McIlroy revealed that he had to persuade his parents to attend the Masters as they believed his victory a year ago was due to their absence.
The golfer from Northern Ireland made history by becoming just the fourth man to win back-to-back titles at Augusta. His triumph last year marked his completion of the Career Grand Slam, and this year’s win marked his sixth major victory, tying him with Sir Nick Faldo.
After finishing his final round, McIlroy embraced his daughter, Poppy, and his wife, Erica, before sharing a moment with his hesitant parents, whom he had convinced to make the trip.
Despite previous setbacks at the Masters, McIlroy managed to secure his first Green Jacket last year. His parents, fearing they were a jinx, were initially reluctant to watch him play.
During his winner’s speech, McIlroy expressed gratitude to his parents for attending, disproving their superstitions and acknowledging their support. He credited them for being wonderful parents and expressed his desire to emulate their parenting for his daughter, Poppy.
McIlroy set a Masters record by reaching -12 on Friday, establishing a significant lead of six shots over his competitors. Despite facing challenges over the weekend, he maintained his composure to clinch the victory by one shot over Scottie Scheffler.
Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy stated, “It was a challenging weekend, but I’m pleased to have persevered and succeeded. I aimed to prove that last year’s win was no fluke.”
Although he faced early setbacks in the final round, McIlroy regained momentum with a series of birdies. He humorously remarked that winning golf tournaments is more challenging than his earlier victories in his 20s.
