A law firm is under investigation for a suspected fraud amounting to £39.5 million, affecting numerous potential victims, as confirmed by a regulatory body. The firm in question, Sheffield-based PM Law Ltd, which operated across 25 offices nationwide, is facing allegations of a sophisticated fraud scheme, including the improper removal and misuse of millions of pounds of client funds.
Former clients have reported experiencing financial losses during property transactions due to the sudden disappearance of their money, leading to the risk of disrupted moves or forfeited deposits following the firm’s abrupt closure. On 2 February, PM Law Ltd’s offices in Yorkshire, Cumbria, Berkshire, Derbyshire, and London shut down unexpectedly, leaving hundreds of employees without jobs and tens of thousands of cases in limbo.
Following the closure, the Solicitors Regulation Authority intervened and disclosed that over £21 million in claims have been submitted to its compensation fund thus far. One affected individual, Amy-Jade Hughes, shared her distressing experience of being left stranded while on the verge of relocating to Australia. Despite legally finalizing the sale of her property in Worksop, her mortgage remained unpaid by PM Law Ltd, resulting in her accumulating a significant debt burden.
Another couple, Ellie Vaughan and William Mann, faced challenges with their property remortgaging process through the firm, which halted mid-transfer upon its closure. The PM Law group, consisting of 11 companies with more than 30 trading names, specialized in various legal services such as personal injury, wills, and conveyancing, employing over 600 staff members.
Director of Client Protection at the SRA, Paul Hastings, emphasized ongoing efforts to assist former PM Law clients in recovering their funds and documentation. Many affected individuals were left in precarious situations due to the firm’s misconduct, such as disrupted property transactions, potential loss of deposits, and delayed probate matters, necessitating extensive support during these distressing circumstances.
