Spanning over the Pearl River Delta for 34 miles, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge holds the title of the world’s longest sea crossing, connecting the Chinese cities of Hong Kong, Zhuhai, and Macau. This massive 55km structure took nine years to build, with an estimated cost of approximately £15 billion.

Significantly reducing travel time between the three cities, the bridge has transformed what used to be an hour-long ferry ride into a quick 40-minute drive. It is part of a comprehensive plan to improve transportation links in the Greater Bay Area, a region that Beijing aims to develop into a major economic center.

By providing a more direct link between Hong Kong, Macau, and cities in Guangdong province, the bridge aims to enhance trade and mobility in the region. The construction involved various key elements such as long-span bridges, artificial islands, and connecting roadways.

The primary segment consists of three navigation channel bridges – Jiuzhou, Jianghai, and Qingzhou – allowing large vessels to pass through one of China’s busiest shipping zones. Despite facing challenges like frequent typhoons and a challenging marine environment, engineers successfully designed the bridge with single-column piers to minimize disruption to water flow and protect local wildlife like the Chinese white dolphin.

Featuring unique cable-supported structures with distinct tower designs, the bridge offers a visually appealing and varied appearance from different viewpoints. Notably, the Jiuzhou Bridge maintains its original sail-shaped towers following revisions during the detailed design phase.

The project involved engineering consultancy firm Arup in various aspects, including preliminary design work, construction of artificial islands, and key road and tunnel connections on the Hong Kong and Macau sides. Additional infrastructure like boundary crossing facilities and the Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link further integrate the bridge into the broader transport network.

Since its inauguration in October 2018 by Chinese President Xi Jinping, the bridge has become a vital part of the region’s transport system, underscoring China’s ambitious infrastructure goals and the growing need for faster connections between major cities. Designed to withstand earthquakes and typhoons, the bridge, built with 400,000 tonnes of steel, serves as a critical link for the region’s transportation network.

According to Guangdong News, the number of northbound trips via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge from Hong Kong and Macau has surpassed 10 million, with daily traffic averaging around 11,000 trips.
