In the UK, despite the prevalence of fast 4G and 5G networks on new phones, the older 2G technology from 1993 is still in use for some devices like alarms and health equipment. Virgin Media O2 has announced plans to shut down the 2G network by 2029 as part of its network modernization efforts to enhance future connectivity.

The decision signifies a significant advancement in the company’s strategy to upgrade its infrastructure for improved services. Retiring 2G will enable Virgin Media O2 to redirect investments towards expanding and enhancing its 4G and 5G networks. This transition is expected to result in speedier connections, greater reliability, and reduced energy consumption, meeting consumer demands for enhanced mobile services.

Jeanie York, Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Media O2, mentioned that a substantial investment of £700 million will be made this year to revamp the mobile network. The focus will be on providing customers with dependable and efficient 4G and 5G services by phasing out the outdated 2G technology.

Following the recent closure of the 3G network and participation in the government’s 2G switch-off initiative, Virgin Media O2 aims to execute the transition responsibly without causing disruptions to customers. While most customers will not need to take any action, businesses relying on 2G may need to start planning for the network shutdown.

Virgin Media O2 assures direct communication with customers to support them during the necessary upgrade process. The planned shutdown in 2029 allows sufficient time for customers and businesses to prepare and upgrade any devices reliant on 2G technology.

2G, introduced in the UK in 1993, has been fundamental to mobile communication for years, offering reliable voice calls and text messaging with broad coverage. Despite the faster data speeds provided by modern networks like 4G and 5G, 2G remains valuable for its reliability, energy efficiency, and extensive coverage. However, transitioning away from 2G will enable Virgin Media O2 to focus on advancing to the next level of connectivity in response to increasing demands for advanced mobile services.
