US officials are hopeful about reaching a new agreement with Iran to reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz, leading to a significant drop in oil prices. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed optimism, mentioning a potential deal with Iran to unlock the blocked waterway in the near future. State Secretary Marco Rubio acknowledged progress in negotiations but emphasized that final agreements were pending. President Donald Trump highlighted ongoing talks with Tehran, emphasizing the urgency for Iran to seize the opportunity for a resolution.

In contrast, Iranian authorities denied engaging in any discussions with the US. Following Bessent’s statements, the international oil benchmark, Brent, plunged over 5.4% to $79.21 per barrel, triggering a decrease in petrol prices, although the impact is typically gradual compared to price hikes.

Addressing concerns about toll charges, Bessent emphasized the importance of freedom of movement in the region. Anticipating further price declines, he emphasized the positive impact on various sectors, including energy, fertilizer, and industrial gases, once the backlog of ships in the Persian Gulf is alleviated. The potential easing of prices could lead to significant relief across multiple industries.
