US-Iran Talks Stumble Over Nuclear Demands

The United States and Iran have encountered a new obstacle in their peace negotiations, escalating tensions towards the brink of war once again. President Donald Trump criticized Iran’s demands as ‘completely unacceptable,’ prompting Iran to assert that its response was ‘not excessive.’ In the latest proposals, the US insisted that Iran commit to refraining from developing a nuclear weapon and ceasing uranium enrichment.

In exchange, the US offered to lift sanctions and release billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets. Both countries, responsible for implementing rival blockades in the Strait of Hormuz, agreed to reopen the crucial waterway within 30 days of signing the agreement. Iran reportedly included a request in its counter-offer for an end to conflicts on all fronts, including those involving Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah.

Iran prioritized discussions on ending hostilities and ensuring maritime security in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz during the initial negotiation phase. Only afterward would they address their nuclear program in subsequent talks, indicating a willingness to temporarily suspend uranium enrichment for a shorter period than the 20 years proposed by the US. Iran, however, rejected the idea of dismantling its nuclear facilities.

The US demands were labeled as ‘unreasonable’ by Iran’s Foreign Ministry, especially as Israel escalated attacks on Lebanese Hezbollah. Tehran proposed unblocking the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the release of frozen Iranian assets. Recent Israeli bombardments in Lebanon resulted in the deaths of at least 51 individuals, including two medical staff, while a separate US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon entered its third week, coinciding with the beginning of the Iran ceasefire on April 8.

President Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Iran’s proposal, stating, “I don’t like it,” and referring to Iran’s representatives’ response as ‘totally unacceptable.’ Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei reiterated Iran’s offer to reopen the Strait of Hormuz while emphasizing the need to end regional conflicts and release frozen Iranian assets held abroad in response to the latest US proposition.

A potential stumbling block in the negotiations lies in the US and Israel’s exclusion of Lebanon from any peace agreement with Iran. Baghaei also cautioned European nations, such as the UK, against positioning ships closer to the Gulf in anticipation of a peace settlement, warning that any interference in the Strait of Hormuz or the Persian Gulf could lead to further complications and price escalations. Iran emphasized the importance of responsible actions by world countries in handling the situation.
