Ukraine is preparing for significant Russian drone and missile attacks targeting civilians following the Kremlin’s promise to execute “massive group strikes.” The city of Kharkiv in Ukraine was struck by precision aerial bombs, resulting in two fatalities and nine injuries in Sumy due to Russian missile bombardment.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has issued threats of intensified and larger air assaults on Ukraine in retaliation for a major offensive against Russia. The Kremlin is incensed by Ukraine’s substantial attack on Moscow, which resulted in widespread damage and a thick cloud of smoke. Over 1,000 drones, including 200 targeting the capital, were deployed in Russia, with a significant oil refinery near the Kremlin hit for the second time.

This recent assault marks the most extensive attack Ukraine has launched on Moscow during the prolonged conflict. Lavrov stated that the strikes were in response to provocations by Ukrainian forces, targeting locations critical to the combat capability of Ukraine’s Armed Forces.

As tensions escalate, the UK is set to send 150,000 drones and air defense systems to Ukraine, funded by frozen Russian assets. A new fund of £752 million was announced during a meeting of NATO defense ministers and the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Brussels.

The aid package includes Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMM) and ground-based radar systems aimed at enhancing Ukraine’s air defense against Russia’s ongoing missile and drone assaults. Ukraine’s strategic strikes within Russian territory have primarily targeted the fuel industry, resulting in severe energy shortages and posing challenges for President Vladimir Putin.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky justified the recent attack as a response to Russian aggression against Ukrainian cities and communities. Zelensky emphasized the effectiveness of Ukrainian strikes and called for diplomatic solutions to end the conflict.

The Institute for the Study of War based in the US highlighted the impact of Ukrainian attacks on Russia, with fuel restrictions and shortages affecting supplies to frontline troops in Ukraine. The ISW noted vulnerabilities in Russian air defenses and the dilemmas faced by the Kremlin in managing the domestic repercussions of the war it instigated.
