Supermarket customers faced frustration on Wednesday due to the ‘severe’ heatwave gripping the UK, leading to refrigeration issues and empty shelves in major stores. Refrigerators and freezers in various outlets like Tesco and M&S displayed printed warnings, indicating the problem. Reports emerged of Tesco branches in Haslingden, Crewe, and Altrincham experiencing shelf shortages, with videos and images shared with the Manchester Evening News showcasing the situation. Similarly, out-of-service fridges were observed at the Crewe M&S, while Sainsbury’s stores nationwide also felt the impact.

The stores grappled with refrigeration challenges amidst soaring temperatures across Britain, hampering shoppers’ access to essential items like meat and milk. Multiple supermarket branches nationwide seemed affected by the issue. A discontented shopper took to social media, cautioning others about the situation at Haslingden Tesco. They described the meat aisle as empty and expressed concerns about food wastage due to malfunctioning refrigeration units.

Videos and images circulated showing barren shelves in fridges at an Altrincham Tesco store. Signs posted on the fridges explained the units were not operational to ensure the store’s remaining fridges and freezers operated effectively. Similar notices were seen on the fridges at the Crewe store, indicating technical faults. Another shopper mentioned encountering malfunctioning fridges and freezers at the Crewe Tesco and M&S, along with broken fridges at Waitrose in Sandbach, hinting at a widespread issue in the UK.

Social media users shared their experiences on the record-breaking hottest June day in the UK, with temperatures reaching a provisional 36C. Concerns about refrigeration breakdowns were echoed across various regions, indicating the severity of the situation. Morrisons in Swindon also apologized for a maintenance issue leading to empty freezers. The extreme heatwave, triggering amber and rare red warnings from the Met Office, persisted, affecting large parts of England and Wales with hot and humid weather conditions.

Tesco, M&S, and Waitrose were reached out to for comments on the matter. The unprecedented weather conditions have posed significant challenges for supermarkets, highlighting the strain on refrigeration systems.
