The UK is facing a weather alert issued by the Met Office for strong winds. A yellow warning is active from noon until 7pm today, affecting several coastal areas. The warning specifically covers six regions in Northern Ireland: County Antrim, County Armagh, County Down, County Fermanagh, County Londonderry, and County Tyrone.
The forecast predicts a period of intense and blustery winds that could lead to disruptions in transportation and infrastructure. Drivers are advised to anticipate delays on roads, railways, and ferries due to the weather conditions.
According to the Met Office, strong southeasterly winds are expected to move from southwest to northeast across Northern Ireland during the afternoon, gradually clearing by evening. Wind speeds are projected to reach 45-55 mph, with potential gusts of up to 60 mph along exposed coasts of counties Down and Antrim and near high ground in other areas. Additionally, persistent rain will create challenging travel conditions across all regions.
Individuals near the coast are urged to exercise caution during stormy weather, particularly due to the risk of large waves. Even from the shore, powerful waves can pose a threat, potentially sweeping individuals into the sea. Extra care is advised when walking near cliffs, ensuring awareness of surroundings and keeping dogs on a leash. In case of emergencies, contact 999 and request assistance from the Coastguard.
As of now, there are no other Met Office warnings in effect across the UK. Stay informed with the latest news updates by subscribing to email notifications for top stories of the day.
