Many Brits who have used GLP-1 weight loss medication have chosen to keep it confidential, despite it being considered a groundbreaking advancement in medical science. Research conducted by digital healthcare provider Voy indicates that 83% of eligible adults believe there is a stigma associated with using weight loss medication. More than half of those utilizing injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy have hidden their usage from family and friends due to fears of being judged.
The launch of a new oral GLP-1 weight loss pill in the UK aims to offer a more discreet treatment option for individuals. Respondents expressed concerns that they would be criticized for taking shortcuts, lacking self-discipline, or not relying solely on lifestyle changes for weight loss.
Despite the potential health benefits of GLP-1 medication, some individuals have hesitated to try it due to various reasons. Approximately 15% are apprehensive about injections, while others worry about the costs (59%) or potential side effects (32%). The introduction of oral GLP-1 treatments could transform the perception and accessibility of weight management support, providing a more affordable and convenient alternative.
According to Voy, more than two-thirds of eligible adults are inclined to opt for a daily oral weight loss medication over a weekly injection. Dr. Earim Chaudry, Chief Medical Officer at Voy, emphasized the importance of oral GLP-1 medication in expanding treatment options and potentially reducing barriers to care.
While advancements in treatment options are promising, the stigma surrounding obesity persists. Dr. Chaudry highlighted the need for societal attitudes towards obesity to evolve beyond misconceptions and judgment, emphasizing the importance of changing the conversation around this condition at all levels.
