Energy workers in the UK are on the brink of a significant shift in skills training and protections following an agreement between offshore wind supply chain firms and trade unions to adopt the government’s Fair Work Charter.

The charter, developed in collaboration with unions and businesses, mandates offshore wind developers to contribute to a skills fund or allocate a minimum budget for skills training starting in 2027. Initially, 37 supply chain companies and five trade unions, including GMB, Prospect, and Unison, have committed to endorsing the charter.

Under the agreement, unions will have enhanced access to work sites and ensure stringent health and safety standards within the burgeoning offshore wind industry. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband emphasized the government’s commitment to empowering workers, stating that advancing the clean energy agenda must coincide with bolstering workers’ rights.

Companies that fail to align with the charter risk missing out on government funding through clean industry incentives and renewables auctions. The government has pledged clean energy generation by 2030, with the sector expected to create 100,000 new positions in offshore wind. Salaries in offshore wind are anticipated to surpass the UK average by around ÂŁ10,000, with 90% of the oil and gas workforce possessing transferable skills for offshore renewables.

In response to the announcement, Charlotte Brumpton-Childs, GMB National Secretary, highlighted the charter as a pivotal step towards ensuring fair treatment, decent wages, job security, and industry-wide standards for workers in the clean energy sector. TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak lauded the charter as a crucial move towards establishing quality, secure, unionized jobs in the offshore wind industry, emphasizing the importance of respecting and dignifying workers on the forefront of enhancing the UK’s energy independence.
