Britons are set to endure another round of scorching temperatures, reaching highs of 30C, accompanied by heat health warnings. Large parts of England are facing prolonged dry weather conditions, with only 3% of the average July rainfall received so far. This has led to hosepipe bans affecting 23 million customers, with the possibility of these bans continuing throughout the summer.
Wildfires have been raging in various locations across England, with Scotland also experiencing a significant wildfire in the Cairngorms. In response to the dry weather, a nationwide hosepipe ban has been implemented in the Republic of Ireland. Yellow heat health alerts have been issued for several regions including the East Midlands, East of England, London, South East, South West, and West Midlands, effective from 9am on Friday until 9am on Sunday.
Temperatures in the affected areas are expected to range from the mid to high 20s, with a potential high of 30C as the country remains in the grip of a prolonged dry and warm spell. The UK Health Security Agency has issued a heat health warning as drought conditions have been declared in North Wales and the Upper Severn due to the unprecedented dryness, heatwaves, wildfires, and diminishing rivers.
This summer’s dry conditions follow a similar pattern from last year, with the UK facing increasingly extreme weather patterns influenced by human-induced climate change, primarily attributed to the burning of fossil fuels. The Met Office has forecasted temperatures reaching 30C in parts of South East England on Friday, while Scotland and Northern Ireland may experience scattered clouds.
Meteorologist Craig Snell anticipates rain moving southwards on Saturday, progressing from Scotland and Northern Ireland to northern England and parts of Wales. By Sunday, a more refreshing change in temperatures is expected across most of the UK, with the possibility of rain in areas that have been dry in recent weeks. These heat alerts coincide with the beginning of a period when millions of motorists are expected to embark on summer road trips.
The AA has reported that around 6.3 million drivers are planning road trips exceeding 100 miles between Friday and Thursday. The Port of Dover is bracing for a busy weekend but has taken measures to mitigate any delays caused by new EU border checks.
