The UK and France have revealed plans for a “peaceful” initiative aimed at safeguarding the Strait of Hormuz to avert economic turmoil, according to a statement by Keir Starmer. The Prime Minister disclosed that military strategists from numerous nations will convene in London next week to finalize the mission details, which will encompass mine clearance. However, in a recent social media outburst, Donald Trump expressed opposition to assistance from NATO members.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the joint British-French operation would be initiated “when circumstances permit,” highlighting the significance of reopening the maritime passage as a global imperative and shared responsibility. Speaking in conjunction with French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, Mr. Starmer confirmed the forthcoming multinational mission’s peaceful and defensive nature, intended to reassure commercial vessels and support mine clearance efforts. All nations interested in preserving global trade’s unimpeded flow are encouraged to participate.

At a summit in Paris attended by leaders from 49 countries, discussions centered on securing the 104-mile shipping route responsible for transporting 20% of the world’s oil and natural gas supplies. The strait had been effectively closed following military actions by Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu against Iran in late February, resulting in a surge in petrol prices globally and concerns regarding potential shortages if the conflict persists.

Shortly after Iran’s announcement of reopening the Strait of Hormuz to shipping, welcomed by Trump, the US leader shared on his Truth Social platform about declining NATO’s offer of assistance unless for oil transportation purposes, criticizing the alliance’s efficacy. Mr. Starmer reiterated during a press briefing in Paris that the mission being assembled is defensive in nature and follows a ceasefire agreement.

The US and Iran are currently observing a fragile truce scheduled to last until April 22, while Israel and Lebanon have commenced a 10-day ceasefire agreement. Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, declared the complete opening of the Strait of Hormuz for commercial vessels throughout the remaining ceasefire period, as per the coordinated route specified by Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization. Trump acknowledged Iran’s declaration of the strait being open for full passage but affirmed the continued US blockade on Iranian ports until the completion of transactions with Iran.
