President Trump has raised the idea of renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” as revealed in a social media post on Tuesday morning.
In the post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “The United States is considering renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America due to anticipated decreased business with Ontario. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
This announcement comes after tensions escalated in Canada-U.S. trade discussions, with Ontario Premier Doug Ford responding to Trump’s actions by stating, “kiss my ass,” leading Trump to label him as “Flunky Ford.”
Ford’s initial remarks were aired on Toronto radio station Newstalk 1010 in response to new tariffs, with further comments made during a news conference in Hamilton, Ont., where he emphasized the possibility of various retaliatory measures.
In response to Ford’s statements, Trump dismissed them as “bluster” in a post on Truth Social, criticizing Ford and Carney as “clowns” and poor leaders.
Industry Minister Mélanie Joly vows Canada will resist the Lake Ontario renaming threat, emphasizing the need to counter such actions.
The breakdown in Canada-U.S. trade talks last week, as noted by Prime Minister Mark Carney, was attributed to the Trump administration’s introduction of unacceptable measures, including restrictions on Canada’s trade agreements with other nations.
Following this, the U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on approximately $28 billion worth of Canadian goods, prompting Carney to announce retaliatory tariffs set to take effect on September 8.
Ford Advocates for Return to Trade Negotiations
During an interview on CNN, Ford expressed the need to de-escalate the situation with Trump, highlighting the importance of returning to the bargaining table for fair trade agreements that benefit both countries.
Ford emphasized the impact on American consumers due to rising costs and called for unity to strengthen the relationship between Canada and the U.S., proposing the concept of “Fortress North America.”
