A train collision at Wang Yen Railway station in Kanchanaburi, Thailand, left multiple passengers injured, including a seven-year-old British girl. The incident occurred when a six-carriage train, carrying numerous passengers, was struck by its locomotive on Saturday evening, causing windows to shatter and passengers to be thrown from their seats. Authorities reported that 13 passengers were hospitalized, while 20 others sustained minor injuries. Among the injured were three British nationals, including the young girl, who were treated at the nearby Phahol Pholpayuhasena Hospital.
According to a witness interviewed by Khaosod English, passengers experienced being tossed around inside the carriage upon impact. The witness mentioned the presence of both Thai and foreign tourists on the train, waiting at Wang Yen Station for a locomotive swap, a process that usually takes approximately 20 minutes. Suddenly, a severe impact occurred, causing chaos within the carriages as passengers were thrown around, with some hitting their heads on windows, leading to breakages, and others falling to the floor.
Authorities attributed the collision to a brake failure on the shunting locomotive, a small engine responsible for moving the train carriages within the station. The malfunction caused the locomotive to collide with the stationary carriages. Subsequently, a replacement locomotive was dispatched to the scene to transport the carriages back to Kanchanaburi Station.
The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) issued an apology for the incident and announced that engineers would conduct a thorough inspection of the locomotive’s mechanical systems to prevent similar accidents in the future.
