The tragic death of a beloved teenage girl who was swept out to sea has sparked concerns about potential missed opportunities in the emergency response, an ongoing inquest revealed. Edie Smart, aged 13, passed away on July 28, 2025, four days after encountering difficulties in the waters south of Whitley Bay beach in North Tyneside. During the inquest proceedings at Newcastle Coroners’ Court, Edie’s mother, Louise, conveyed heartfelt sentiments on behalf of the family.

The inquest, set to span five days, featured testimonies from individuals involved in the rescue efforts to save Edie on the fateful afternoon of July 24, 2025. The family expressed gratitude to the courageous lifeguards, Nathan Ramsey and Joseph Walker-Hardwick, who risked their lives to bring Edie to safety amidst challenging conditions.

Acknowledging the challenges faced during the rescue operation, HM Coastguard’s Rhys Stevens admitted that there might have been a delay in calling an ambulance. The court was informed about the difficulties encountered in rescuing Edie from a perilous location where the sea and rocks created hazardous conditions.

Describing Edie as a fantastic and deeply cherished member of their family, the statement from Edie’s family highlighted concerns about potential missed opportunities that could have impacted her chances of survival. Questions were raised regarding safety measures, communication delays between agencies, and the adequacy of the emergency response.

The inquest, under the purview of the Human Rights Act, aims to evaluate the effectiveness of existing risk management systems in safeguarding the right to life. The family emphasized Edie’s positive impact on those around her and received an overwhelming outpouring of support following her untimely passing.

In a statement acknowledging the bravery of the rescuers, the family’s solicitor praised their heroic efforts while directing attention towards the need for robust systems to protect lives in such situations. Testimonies from the police inquiry and coastguard officials shed light on the challenges faced during the rescue operation and the subsequent investigation.

The inquest continues to delve into the circumstances surrounding Edie’s tragic death and the response mechanisms in place to prevent such incidents in the future.
