Rescuers have recovered the bodies of four Italian divers who had gone missing in the Maldives, sparking questions about the tragic incident.
Five Italian divers are presumed to have perished while exploring a cave approximately 50 meters deep in Vaavu Atoll. The Italian ministry confirmed the incident, leading to a search operation that was temporarily halted after a local military diver lost his life during a risky rescue attempt.
The bodies of the four missing divers were located four days after their disappearance, with the fifth diver, a diving instructor, found outside the cave earlier. The Maldives government, with the assistance of three Finnish diving experts, the police, and the military, located the bodies deep inside the cave. The discovery raised concerns as the recreational diving limit in the Maldives is set at 30 meters.
Maldives’ presidential spokesperson, Mohamed Hussain Shareef, expressed uncertainty over why the divers ventured into a cave beyond the legal depth limit. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of death for the five Italian divers. The victims were identified as Monica Montefalcone, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, Muriel Oddenino, Gianluca Benedetti, and Federico Gualtieri.
Severe weather conditions hindered rescue efforts, complicating the operation to recover the bodies. Initial search teams had previously located and marked the entrance to the cave system where the divers went missing.
