A tragic incident unfolded at Formby beach in Merseyside, where 15-year-old Chiedza Nyanjowa lost her life while attempting to retrieve a ball from the water. Chiedza, who couldn’t swim, was playing volleyball with her cousins when she and her 11-year-old cousin were swept away by the waves. Despite being warned to stay out of the water, Chiedza ventured in, leading to a distressing chain of events.

Struggling to keep afloat, the two youngsters found themselves in deep waters, with the waves rapidly submerging them. Chiedza valiantly clung to the ball while her cousin sought help, a process that unfortunately took too long. Despite the valiant efforts of onlookers and medical professionals performing CPR, Chiedza succumbed to the incident.

The subsequent inquest highlighted the sequence of events that led to Chiedza’s tragic demise, attributing it to a brain injury caused by drowning. The coroner, Ms. Wheeler, expressed deep condolences to the grieving family, emphasizing the unforeseen nature of the tragedy. Concerns were also raised about illegal parking in the vicinity, although no direct link to the incident was established.

Ms. Wheeler lauded the bystanders who intervened in the crisis and criticized the irresponsible parking practices that could hinder emergency responses. While no specific actions were recommended to address the parking issues, the importance of community responsibility and swift action in such emergencies was underscored.
