Eight individuals lost their lives in a tragic bus collision in Mexico, resulting in 19 others sustaining injuries. The incident occurred around 5pm local time yesterday when the bus veered off the road, plummeting over 600 feet down an embankment in a winding section. Images from the location show the overturned bus in Zontecomatlan, located in Veracruz’s eastern region.
The bus was carrying a full load of passengers, many of whom were reportedly on their way home for the Christmas holiday. Among the casualties are both adults and children. Following the accident, authorities initiated a rescue operation at the crash site, confirming multiple fatalities.
State officials released a statement overnight, stating, “The state government is leading the response to a bus accident that occurred in a ravine in Zontecomatlan. Currently, 19 injured individuals are receiving treatment and have been transported to Chicontepec and Huayacocotla. Regrettably, the Public Prosecutor’s Office has verified eight fatalities. Our teams are actively engaged in rescue and assistance efforts at the scene.”
The bus had departed from Mexico City en route to Chicontepec in Veracruz’s Huasteca region, known for its lush landscapes and natural beauty. The circumstances leading to the bus veering off the road remain unclear, including the fate of the driver, identified as Carlos Daniel Baez.
This tragic incident follows another fatal crash in Colombia earlier this month, where sixteen students lost their lives during a graduation trip. Their bus careened 250 feet down a steep embankment, resulting in the driver’s death as well. The tragic event took place in the Antioquia department of northeastern Colombia, near the city of Medellin.
In response to the loss, the Liceo Antioqueno school in Bello paid tribute to the students, expressing, “Flying high, beyond the stars. Their time here was brief but their mark is indelible.” The school shared a mosaic of the graduates, honoring their memory and emphasizing the profound impact they left during their time at the institution.
“We remember them with deep sorrow, gratitude, and respect,” a spokesperson added. “Their presence at our school made an enduring impact that will forever remain in our hearts. Our thoughts are with their families and loved ones during this period of immense grief.”
