An 18-year-old, Sonny Horsfall, crashed his newly acquired black Audi A4 into an 84-year-old man on West Dyke Road in Redcar, North Yorkshire. Following the collision, Horsfall texted a friend confessing, “I’ve killed someone.” The incident occurred at 10:23 pm, with the car veering off the road, hitting a tree, and striking the elderly pedestrian.

Despite the severe impact that saw the victim tossed into the air, Horsfall, who had just bought the car for £250, continued with his evening, even ordering a pizza shortly after the accident. Witnesses described the aftermath with the Audi’s front wheel hanging off, orange sparks emanating from the vehicle, and significant damage to the front windscreen and bonnet.

Emergency services were alerted by a neighbor who discovered the injured man on the grass. By that time, Horsfall had fled the scene, later admitting to a friend via Snapchat that he was responsible for the collision. The victim survived but sustained serious injuries, requiring surgery to reconstruct his hip and being placed in an induced coma.

Horsfall, who was disqualified from driving, was eventually apprehended in Malton and faced charges of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and uninsured, and fleeing the scene of an accident. He received a three-year prison sentence and a four-year driving ban.

During the court proceedings, Horsfall’s defense attorney highlighted his client’s remorse and struggles with PTSD, emphasizing that incarceration had been a traumatic experience for him. The judge condemned Horsfall’s reckless actions, acknowledging the significant impact on the victim’s life and emphasizing the importance of responsible driving.

Detective Constable Rachael Johnson expressed the avoidability of the collision and emphasized the gravity of disregarding road safety regulations, underscoring the potential fatal consequences of reckless driving. The sentencing of Horsfall aimed to serve as a poignant reminder of the responsibilities associated with driving and the severe repercussions of negligence behind the wheel.
