A tribunal has determined that a primary school teacher feigned illness to skip work and attend a stag do in Portugal with friends. Joe Wilson, employed at Listerdale Junior Academy in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, informed his superiors that he was unwell on May 18, 2023, claiming to have been sick all night. Subsequently, he extended his absence by stating he couldn’t ingest food or water, promising updates on his condition.
Later revealed, Wilson’s sick leave was a cover-up for his participation in a friend’s stag do in Lisbon. He resorted to tearing passport pages to disguise his trip to Portugal. The Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) discovered that Wilson went on the unauthorized holiday from May 18 to May 19, 2023, after notifying his employer early morning on the first day of his absence about his fabricated illness.
Wilson’s deception was exposed by a colleague who noticed incriminating photos of him at an airport with a beer. Despite initially denying the trip, Wilson eventually admitted to the TRA his intention to attend the stag do. He acknowledged his misconduct and regretted falsifying his sickness, admitting to removing passport pages in an attempt to hide his absence.
In a statement to the TRA, Wilson admitted his wrongdoing, attributing it to poor judgment influenced by circumstances at the time. He expressed remorse and accepted responsibility for his actions. An investigation found missing pages in his passport, confirming his unauthorized absence and deceitful conduct towards the school.
The TRA panel condemned Wilson’s behavior, stating that his actions breached ethical standards expected from a teacher and could tarnish the profession’s reputation. While a prohibition order was deemed excessive, the panel decided to publicize the case’s findings as a disciplinary measure.
