Reports suggest that a suspended Labour MP is on the verge of resigning, potentially creating an opportunity for Andy Burnham to make a comeback to Parliament.
There has been widespread speculation that Andrew Gwynne would step down, triggering a by-election, despite his previous denials. According to The Times, he is expected to announce his decision to retire later today.
Additionally, The Guardian has reported that Mr. Gwynne has reached an agreement to retire. The MP for Gorton & Denton in the North West had his Labour whip withdrawn last year following offensive WhatsApp messages. If these reports are accurate, it could signal a potential bid by Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham to challenge Keir Starmer.
Andy Burnham has been linked to a leadership challenge against the Prime Minister for several months but must first secure a return to the House of Commons. He would also need approval from a national executive committee (NEC) panel to be considered as a candidate.
Responding to the speculation on BBC radio, Health Secretary Wes Streeting expressed his well wishes for Andrew Gwynne, emphasizing the need for strong candidates in any potential by-election.
In a previous statement, Mr. Burnham criticized Keir Starmer’s team for creating a “climate of fear” within the Labour Party, advocating for significant changes to address the situation. He highlighted an “existential” threat to the party in an interview with The Telegraph.
Despite ongoing rumors, Andrew Gwynne has consistently dismissed the idea of stepping down, stating in September his intention to serve a full term and ruling out any path to No. 10 through Gorton and Denton.
In February, the Prime Minister removed Mr. Gwynne as a health minister after offensive messages surfaced from a WhatsApp group. The messages included derogatory remarks about various individuals and groups, leading to his dismissal.
The Mirror has reached out to Mr. Gwynne for a response.
