Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan are facing an extended stay in jail as they contest their extradition to the United Kingdom. A federal judge has ruled that the brothers will remain in custody for at least two more weeks until their next court hearing. The accusations against them include multiple counts of rape and sex trafficking.
US magistrate Lauren Louis has scheduled a detention hearing for August 13 to determine whether the social media influencers should be released or kept in jail during the extradition process, which could stretch over several months.
The Tates were absent from the court on Monday and have been in custody since a brief court appearance following their arrest on July 18.
Their legal team is pushing for the US government to hand over the documents that UK officials used to secure the brothers’ arrest, claiming that all they have are mere allegations. The defense attorney, Joseph McBride, stated, “It’s just their word against our word right now.”
During the court proceedings, US attorney Alejandra Lopez mentioned that the UK authorities have until mid-September to provide all relevant materials to the State Department. The brothers have consistently maintained that their controversial statements were either taken out of context or meant as jokes.
One of their lawyers, Jackie Perczek, argued that the Tates have demonstrated they are not a flight risk by regularly returning to Romania, even after facing accusations there related to luring women for exploitation.
The former professional kickboxers, who hold dual US and UK citizenship, boast a substantial social media following and have openly supported Donald Trump. Despite this, the White House has distanced itself from the brothers’ legal situation.
McBride insisted that the Tates have committed no crimes and should not be extradited for offenses they did not perpetrate. He alleged that the extradition attempt was politically motivated, though specifics were not provided.
In the UK, prosecutors have brought new charges against the brothers based on evidence from police in Bedfordshire, involving four additional accusers. The allegations span from 2010 to 2017 and include serious offenses like rape, assault, trafficking, and crimes related to indecent images of a child and extreme pornography.
Furthermore, the brothers are already facing charges in the UK for crimes against three other accusers between 2012 and 2015, including rape, bodily harm, human trafficking, and controlling prostitution for profit.
Having relocated to Romania in 2016, the brothers were arrested there in 2022 for allegedly participating in schemes to lure women into sexual exploitation. They have denied these accusations, and the legal proceedings in Romania have stalled due to various legal and procedural issues.
