Snooker Legend John Virgo Dies at 79

Legendary snooker commentator John Virgo has passed away at the age of 79. Virgo, known for his iconic voice in the sport, recently appeared on the BBC during the Masters tournament. Originally from Salford, he had a successful playing career, clinching the UK Championship title in 1979. Virgo died in Spain, where he resided.

The sad news was confirmed by World Seniors Snooker chairman Jason Francis on social media, expressing his heartfelt condolences to Virgo’s family. The BBC also released a statement mourning the loss of the snooker legend.

Ronnie O’Sullivan, a prominent figure in snooker, paid tribute to Virgo, highlighting their close friendship. Colleagues like Stephen Hendry and Shaun Murphy also expressed their sorrow at Virgo’s passing, emphasizing his invaluable contributions to the sport.

Virgo, who retired from playing in 1994, transitioned to become a renowned commentator, earning a spot in the World Snooker Tour Hall of Fame. His famous catchphrase “Where’s the cue ball going?” became synonymous with his commentary style. Additionally, Virgo was known for his distinctive waistcoats and flair for trick shots.

Throughout his career, Virgo reached the top ten in world rankings and co-hosted the popular snooker program, Big Break, alongside Jim Davidson. Davidson, in his tribute, praised Virgo for his talent and charisma, reminiscing about their time working together.

In a 2017 interview with Mirror Sport, Virgo candidly discussed his struggles with gambling addiction. Survived by his children from previous marriages, Virgo and his wife Rosie Ries had relocated to Spain in 2020, seeking relief for his chronic neck injury in the warmer climate.
