Police have verified that six deceased individuals were located inside a freight train carriage. The unsettling discovery occurred at a rail yard in Laredo on Sunday, May 10, on a Union Pacific cargo train. Officials have initiated a comprehensive investigation following the distressing revelation.
The Laredo police department confirmed the finding of six deceased individuals, as reported by KGNS. The bodies were uncovered shortly after 2:30 p.m. at 12101 Jim Young Way near mile marker 13.
Authorities have not disclosed the identities or nationalities of the deceased individuals, nor have they confirmed if they were migrants. Laredo, positioned across from Nuevo Laredo in Mexico, is a key border crossing point between the United States and Mexico.
Migrants have been previously found at this location by law enforcement. In July 2024, Border Patrol agents in the Laredo Sector rescued 23 migrants who were attempting to hide on a Union Pacific train. The agents located them locked inside an autorack railcar and safely brought them out.
The recent fatalities occurred after a period of intense heat in the area, with weather reports indicating temperatures rose to approximately 95°F, and the heat index peaked around 104°F on Sunday afternoon, according to the Mirror US.
Union Pacific issued a statement expressing their sorrow over the incident and their cooperation with law enforcement in the investigation.
