The inquest revealed that the former Sheffield United player’s coach engaged in psychological tactics with her before her tragic passing. Maddy Cusack, aged 27, was discovered unconscious by her father at their residence in Horsley, Derbyshire, on September 20, 2023, and subsequently passed away. Prior to her demise, she expressed concerns about facing stigma and mockery within the club.
During the proceedings at Chesterfield Coroner’s Court, it was disclosed that coach Jonathan Morgan had made derogatory remarks about Cusack’s weight while overseeing Sheffield United Women’s team. Cusack’s partner, Grace Riglar, testified that Cusack felt targeted by Morgan’s actions, especially when her playing time was reduced despite being a regular starter previously.
Riglar shared that Cusack had apprehensions about Morgan joining Sheffield United due to past negative encounters at Leicester City under his management. Morgan’s comments about Cusack’s weight led her to alter her diet and exercise routines drastically, affecting her mental well-being.
Furthermore, the inquest highlighted instances where Morgan made uncomfortable references to Riglar as “Mrs Cusack” and inquired about players’ relationships upon his arrival at the club. Cusack had confided in Riglar about her desire to switch careers and move to Dubai to pursue a job as a flight attendant before her tragic death.
Testimony from Eoin Doyle, Cusack’s line manager at Sheffield United’s marketing department, revealed Cusack’s anxious demeanor upon encountering Morgan and her uncharacteristic behaviors, indicating underlying distress. Despite concerns raised during the inquest, Doyle emphasized that he never believed Cusack posed a threat to herself.
As the inquest unfolds, more details are expected to emerge surrounding the circumstances leading to Cusack’s untimely death.
